NWACC Wireless Network Security Workshop
March 1, 2004

OHSU - West Campus

A peer workshop on the topic of Wireless Network Security was held Monday, March 1,2004 at the Oregon Health and Science University West Campus in Beaverton, Oregon. Don Adams, Infrastructure Engineering Senior Manager at OHSU served as the Facilitator for the workshop and Barrett Adams, Manager of Computer Support, served as local arrangements coordinator. Among the issues discussed at the meeting were wireless network implementation in a campus environment, topology, authentication, and encryption, the pros and cons of hotspot vs. saturation deployment, whether or not wireless networks should be limited to campus resources or should provide transparent access to Internet resources, how best to accommodate short-term (“guest”) use of wireless networking without compromising security; and how to integrate authentication of wired and wireless networks.

Thirty-two people from 18 different NWACC member institutions participated in the workshop (and there was a waiting list). Comments from attendees indicated that Don Adams and Barrett Adams both did an excellent job. Specific feedback: on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 was the best, the attendees rated the overall workshop content as 4.31; the value of networking with peers in this setting, 4.54, the logistics, 4.50, and the likelihood of attending another NWACC workshop, 4.69. Twenty-two participants wished to be included in an NWACC-hosted listserv so that they could continue the "peer networking" initiated at the workshop. The total cost of the workshop was approximately $2,800.
